Escape from the city

Outward Bound Singapore is the best camp ever,I must say (:

I am in an awesome group name Magellan which consist of 15 members -
Diyana,Cristelle,Ruzanna,Jason,Jeremy,Amirul,Zulaykha,Ashwin,Yi Yin,Hairul,Noppadol,Czaraim,Amirah,Ching Na.
And Instructor Mei Sze (:

There's something about OBS that stays with you for life!



I love Camp 2 Delta which consist of 3 groups -
Raffles,Raleigh,Mallegan

Almost everyone there look familiar (:

First day of OBS,

Fished out my mobile phone which got lost in my bag of clothings and dialled Jeremy Foong's number. I reached Punggol Jetty and reported attendance.
Then I realised it is a sort of combined uniformed groups camp - NPCC,NCC,NCDCC.
I looked at my groupmates and as usual,my first impression of others are always bad.

We took the boat to Pulau Ubin OBS Campsite 2 (:
Strong winds,strong waves,strong currents. Hair and fringes acts like a kite.
I look at mainland and I told myself,I am going to have fun in this 5 days camp (:

OBS Jetty



Starting off the momentum right is really important.
We then arrived our store which we called the storeroom.
Sort out the tents and stuffs,we went to sort out our rations.
Food of all different kinds,

Oreo,Julie's biscuits,Apples,Oranges,Appollo waffles,Appollo bread,Gardenia's bread,Rainbow bread,Cheese bun,Kaya bun,Chocolate Chip bun,Jams,Instant noodles,Rice grains,Oats,Milo powder,Owl coffee powder,Canned Food,Raisins,Prunes... much more to list.


That is what OBS call,the happy meal or happy food (:

Ashwin and I was feeling homesick.
I was complaining all the way but Diyana tried to comfort me.

Basically,first day is all about settling all the administrative work and logistic work.
We learnt belaying and the scorching sun burnt my whole hand.
Saw the rainwater evaporate from the tar road.

We headed to the site where we will be sleeping and it requires you to walk 99 steps to reach the top (:

Stairway to heaven
We pitched our tent there after Mei Sze taught us how to.
We cooked our dinner and the boiled the luncheon meat!
Czaraim's luncheon meat is good.

After showering in the dirty toilet,we went back to the store and the fire drill.
Everyone gathered near the jetty. Beautiful orange lights are blinking. I miss the mainland opposite this small island (:

We then went back to our tent and knocked ourselves out.
Usually,I will not be able to sleep on the first night of camp.
But Zulayqha made me laugh.
"Who do you think is the hottest or handsome in our group?"
"Czaraim"
"No... Is Jason"
"No la,Czaraim hotter!"

Then she suddenly face the boys' tents and shouted,
"Czaraim,you're hot!"


The light from my torch died.

Second day of OBS

Physical Training in the morning (:
It was not that tiring.

Sea Expedition - Kayaking.
Everyone in Camp 2 Delta went,except for me.
1. I am afraid of seawater.
2. I hate fishes.
3. My parents don't allow me to.

So Instructor Faizul sent me over to Campsite 1 in the speedboat to join another group for High Elements while they kayak to Campsite 1.














I joined Group 12 - Shackleton (:
Made new friends there and saw old friends there!

Their Instructor Faiz is cool.
Helped them to do their "scoreboard"
Because if they can complete the one element,they will earn 1 kayak.
If they can only made it till halfway and drop down,they will earn 1 paddle.
There are 2 boys,each from NPCC and NCC,they were determined to complete the most difficult element there. They succeeded (:

When Camp 2 Delta arrived,I joined my group.
They were preparing for their High Elements already.
So we wore our harness and helmet,prepared for the next activity (:
Did not have any lunch so just grabbed a bread along.

The elements are quite steady so no one gave up halfway - everyone completed (:

Czaraim tried the higher element.





Ashwin was still feeling homesick and so I became his OBS mother.
Cristelle,Diyana,Zulayqha and I sat at one side and talked about OBS.
I love taking unglamorous shot with fun people!


After High Element,we cooked our dinner.

Jason cooked noodles for Ruzanna,Jeremy,himself and me because Yi Yin finished everything.

His cooking is not bad but it is too salty. Did I mention? Jason is famous for his salt (:
Showered and the whole mobile gathered at the place where we placed our bags.
Magellan had a great bonding that night! We exchanged jokes and riddles.
Also,we talked about schools and CCAs (:



After our bonding session,we reported attendance to our instructors at the parade square.
We set off for our campsite which is situated in the forest,but OBS property.
The walk is long. Jerome and Titus (both from Raffles) was behind me.
I held on to Ruzanna's hand tightly,for fear that I might trip.
Thank you Titus who helped me carry my bag for the short while.

We pitched our tents at our campsite.
Jerome and Titus helped us with our tents. Their tent was beside us and they were making a lot of noises. Cristelle was so funny that night.
Zulayqha teared. We comforted her and assured her that she is just hallucinating.

The first 2 hours,I experience no mosquitoes bites but at around 1am,I felt some itch on my leg and hand. It is surprising how this stupid little thing can find their way to suck your leg blood when you are wearing long trackpants with the end tucking into your socks ):

Third day of OBS

OBS reservoir?


As the sun approached,Cristelle,Zulayqha and I woke up (:
Jason heard feedback from Jerome that we were very noisy early in the morning.
Haha. All of you destroyed 1 part of our beauty sleep so we destroyed 1 part of your handsome sleep (:

We had Morning Physical Training again. But we only had some stretching exercise (:

Every group prepared and left group by group.
Raffles was the 1st to leave,Raleigh 2nd,Magellan 3rd.





Then,all 3 groups set off for our land expedition separately (:
We had 4 checkpoints to clear and we were all struggling with our 13kg - 18 kg bag :/
But what actually motivated us is songs!
I don't know who started singing but I remembered me,Cristelle,Zulayqha singing mostly Singapore Songs and then,Jason led us for NCC songs.
As we sing along,we don't feel the tiredness in us. Instead,we walked even faster.





But what makes our land expedition successful is,Czaraim (:
He was the main navigator for the day and planned the routes carefully.
Of course,not forgetting the pacers,spotters,singers.




And the S4/S6/S8
They keep recruiting people into their group.

Haha the S represent Steady,Sexy and what?

We visited the German Girl Shrine (:
We prayed and I lit up the Joss Sticks.

We were so happy when we reached our last checkpoint because it will be our campsite that night! The Ketam Bike Trail?



It is facing the beach and you could see Pasir Ris (:
The sunset was so beautiful.




Cooked our dinner and washed with seawater.






Conversations with the girls from the Raleigh group.
I can skip stone! Though not as good as Noppadol.

Each group will send 4-6 representatives from each group,each gender to do Sentry Duty.
Diyana,Cristelle,Ruzanna and I volunteered. We slept for 1 hour and then woke up.
Saw Theodore (Raffles) and he slowly became my "brother". Haha.
He looked so fierce and anti-social.
But actually he's not.

We walked to the Raffles site after Raleigh & Magellan site.
They are night owls.
Jerome and Titus walked around with us and accompanied us.
After the 1 hour sentry duty,we went back to our tent.
Then they say they want to tell me some ghost stories.

That night is the first night of Hungry Ghosts Festival :/

Then Daryl came and joined too.
If you want to hear any ghosts stories,you should invite him over.
Because I got freaked out and seriously,I teared. But not so badly.
I scratched Jerome's hand and I feel so bad now.
Eh no,he should feel bad because he was the one who suggested telling me ghosts stories to scare me. Haha :D

Amirah came out of her tent and I got her to join me.
I was clutching onto her hand. And Titus seemed to be more afraid because he squeezed my hand. Instead of asking me to relax,I told him to relax.

I cannot deny that the tips that Daryl had given are not useful at all (:

All of us walked to the beach for breeze.

Told Jerome he got a playboy face. Serious.

I fell asleep while they continued their conversations.
Probably still on ghosts or changed topic.
But they woke me up and I went back to Amirah's tent to sleep with her.
All I can remember was that,I slept beside Amirah and hugged her because I got really freaked out by the ghosts stories.

I woke up after a 1 hour of sleep,feeling warm in the tent.
I look out of the "window",trying to look for familiar faces to accompany me but I can only hear some voices.
I was still very scared so I forced myself to sleep.
The next morning,I found out from them that Jerome was outside my tent all night and few guys was also doing sentry duty as well.

Fourth day of OBS

We unpitched our tents and packed up.
Everyone prepared their items for the Sea Expidition (:
Since I am not allowed to kayak,I will be doing Land Expidition again with another group.
They kayaked around 13 km around Pulau Ubin and to Campsite 2.

My rations ran out.
Jerome gave me 2 buns.
But I ate only half of the Cheese Bun.
I really have no appetite throughout the whole journey.

As they left for their Sea Expidition,I hopped to another group - Cheng Ho.

When they reached their 2nd checkpoint,they're allowed to do an activity by their instructor and if they can do it,they can skip one checkpoint.
Their activity is to set up 2 tents in 20 minutes but 10 will be blindfolded,others will have to give instructions.










And stick with Yorklyn. She's really nice! And she even helped me to massage my leg when the muscles ache.
We walked from the Western part of Pulau Ubin to the Eastern Part of Pulau Ubin and back to the Western Part of Pulau Ubin again. My leg was aching so badly,especially my soles.



I never experience such bad aching before. Thanks Aaron for helping me (:
He helped me to carry bottles and allowed me to hold on to his bag if I am tired.
Did not managed to find all the 7 checkpoints.
It was already 5pm and we haven't reached somewhere near Campsite 2 yet.
I missed my groupmates and instructor and you so much.

So when we reached our Campsite for the night before,I knew the checkpoints so I helped them cheat. I know I am not suppose to do that and I told their instructor I will not help them.
But at the rate,I doubt I can see my groupmates before 7pm ):
Moreover,everyone of them was tired already.
When they reached the last checkpoints,
I took over as the navigator (:

And as fast as I could,I walked briskly back to Campsite 2.
Yorklyn was my navigation partner (:
As I stepped into the Campsite,I was screaming!
Yes,I screamed.

Warm welcome by another group to congrats us for completing our journey.
I left Cheng Ho and searched for my groups. I showered and joined them for dinner (:
Dinner was superb!

By just using butter and not oil (:




We shared with other groups and some asked Czaraim if there are more.
Haha. I love Czaraim cooking! I miss his food now ):

Cleaned up and went back to our store.

Breeze was fine and relaxing. Everyone wrote their journal.


Back in our campsite beside the beach,we had a small "quarrel" with another group.
Ok,that was just some communication error.
I couldn't sleep that night. I stared out at the sea.
Everyone around me was sleeping soundly. I want to ask Cristelle and Ruzanna up but they are tired after the Sea Expidition.
So I wanted to see if the Raffles boys were up.
But the "quarrel" might make things awkward. So I forced myself back to sleep AGAIN.

Fifth day of OBS



We woke up,unpitched our tents.
Kept everything in the store and had breakfast (:
I almost forgot what we did on the last day.
Had headache the whole morning so curled myself up and rested.
Exchanged numbers and emails with my groupmates and Cheng Ho group.
Went for morning circle at Block 5.

Did alot of things with the groups.

OUR TWINE. OUR PROMISE.





We dragged for pretty long so we were late for the assemble with other groups.
Exchanged numbers with other groups again. But Shackleton is not with us.
S8 made me so paiseh. Haha.
And we helped Zulayqha to confess love to... (:

This 5 days OBS course have so much love stories to share (:

Bought a OBS Tank Top (:
Because many people bought the same shirt and it will not be unique much.


Walked out to the bus stop with Theodore,Jerome,Titus,Daryl and others.
Boarded the bus with Titus and Jerome but he alighted at Punggol station.
Titus and I alighted at Hougang station.
We walked past Kentucky Fried Chicken and saw Jason,Amirah and friends.
So we had our "lunch" there.
Gave Titus all my chicken because I don't like to eat chicken.
Bus 153 home but Jason alighted at Serangoon MRT station.






So many camps I had attended,this is the first camp which my group bonded so well :D


And this camp made us understand each UG.
Especially when exchanging songs (:






I completed my journey.


Pack list


Mum was all shocked when she saw me.
"Why are you so tanned now?!"
Dad complained too.
"Next time don't go for camp anymore la"

They think going to camp is like a leisure trip -.-
Everyone's laughing at me now for being so pampered.
I want to go kayaking so much,though I am afraid of seawater.
But my dad called them up and insisted that I must not get in touch with the seawater.
Fuck. I am already 15 years old already. Thousands there and all are still alive.
Everytime I thought of this,I force myself to understand you.
You are concern,you love me,you dote on me.

I forced a smile.

But being protective of me will not help me.
I want to overcome my fear and yet,you are not giving me the chance to.
I want to experience new things,but you are not giving me the chance to.
I want to enjoy myself but you are not giving me a chance to.
You say you do not want to pamper me,but you are doing so.

Warm welcome by another group to congrats us for completing our journey.
I left Cheng Ho and searched for my groups. I showered and joined them for dinner (:
Dinner was superb!

Cleaned up and went back to our store.
Emo for awhile at one side with Cristelle.
Then Mei Sze brought us to the Jetty for our night circle (:
Breeze was fine and relaxing. Everyone wrote their journal.


Back in our campsite beside the beach,we had a small "quarrel" with another group.
Ok,that was just some communication error.
I couldn't sleep that night. I stared out at the sea.
Everyone around me was sleeping soundly. I want to ask Cristelle and Ruzanna up but they are tired after the Sea Expidition.
So I wanted to see if the Raffles boys were up.
But the "quarrel" might make things awkward. So I forced myself back to sleep AGAIN.

Fifth day of OBS



We woke up,unpitched our tents.
Kept everything in the store and had breakfast (:
I almost forgot what we did on the last day.
Had headache the whole morning so curled myself up and rested.
Exchanged numbers and emails with my groupmates and Cheng Ho group.
Went for morning circle at Block 5.

Did alot of things with the groups.

We dragged for pretty long so we were late for the assemble with other groups.
Exchanged numbers with other groups again. But Shackleton is not with us.
S8 made me so paiseh. Haha.
And we helped Zulayqha to confess love to... (:

We left the assembly point one by one and boarded the boat.
Reached the reception counter at mainland.

Bought a OBS Tank Top (:

Walked out to the bus stop with Theodore,Jerome,Titus,Daryl and others.
Boarded the bus with Titus and Jerome but he alighted at Punggol station.
Titus and I alighted at Hougang station.
We walked past Kentucky Fried Chicken and saw Jason,Amirah and friends.
So we had our "lunch" there.
Gave Titus all my chicken because I don't like to eat chicken.
Bus 153 home but Jason alighted at Serangoon MRT station.






So many camps I had attended,this is the first camp which my group bonded so well :D


And this camp made us understand each UG.
Especially when exchanging songs (:






I completed my journey.

They think going to camp is like a leisure trip -.-
Everyone's laughing at me now for being so pampered.
I want to go kayaking so much,though I am afraid of seawater.
But my dad called them up and insisted that I must not get in touch with the seawater.
Fuck. I am already 15 years old already. Thousands there and all are still alive.
Everytime I thought of this,I force myself to understand you.
You are concern,you love me,you dote on me.

I forced a smile.

But being protective of me will not help me.
I want to overcome my fear and yet,you are not giving me the chance to.
I want to experience new things,but you are not giving me the chance to.
I want to enjoy myself but you are not giving me a chance to.
You say you do not want to pamper me,but you are doing so.

Why Freedomofdoves? Ever heard of the song - "Paint My Love" by Michael Learns To Rock? Listen to the chorus and you might find out the answer from there. I am not a huge fan of doves but I just find that this uniform resource locator of my blog sounds really comely and it gives me a halcyon feeling. This is where I blog about the story of my life...



Every individual is different. I am a very hyper active person with effervescent personality and I am very sociable :) During my leisure time, I visit the museums or go cycling at the beach. My preferences for genres of music are easy listening, blues, classical and pop. I also search for beautiful pictures for inspirations. I only watch Hong Kong Dramas and news.

Under my parents consent, I have an english name - Athena, as many people do not know how to pronounce my name. I live in this famous little red dot, Singapore. People often mistaken me as a foreigner but I am a pure Singaporean :) My mother is an Indonesian and my father is a Singaporean. Not considering the fact that we are near to the equator, Singapore, this developed country is a wonderful place to live in. Be it traditional songs or NDP theme songs, they are still my favorites.

I attended PAP Kindergarden from 1998 - 2000, Braddell Primary School in 2001, First Toa Payoh Primary School from 2002-2006 and currently studying in Beatty Secondary School. I am a Normal Academic student and holding on to six subjects which are English, Elementary Mathematics, Chinese, Combined Science, Combined Humanities and Design and Technology. This year, I will be taking seven Normal level papers and one Ordinary level English paper.

My greatest wish in life is to travel around the world with my family or friends and be a happy person. I think that is how life should be :) My level of maturity depends on who I am with.

I am from the National Police Cadet Corps and held the post of Assistant Head of Administration and Secondary Two Squad Mentor. In 2008, I was chosen to participate in the NPCC Annual Parade in Home Team Academy. In 2009, I took part in the National Day Parade as a member of the NPCC contingent. In my own unit, I was in the Guard Of Honor Contingent in 2009 and 2010. After the National Day Parade, under NPCC, I went for the five days four nights Outward Bound Singapore Camp in Pulau Ubin. I also feel honored to be one of the 30 cadets who went for the seven days and six nights NPCC Overseas Educational Trip to Hong Kong and Macau from 17 November 2009 to 23 November 2009.
